Tremenheere Gallery

Design: Post & Beam

As one of the largest purpose-built art galleries in Cornwall, Tremenheere Gallery represents a significant cultural addition to Penzance and the wider region. It supports an evolving programme of thoughtfully curated exhibitions, bringing together local, national, and international artists.

The partnership between the two specialist teams of Post & Beam and Norsk Carpentry allowed for complex, experimental timber engineering.

Carpenter Oak provided the massive structural green-oak timber frame design. Norsk Carpentry took the lead on the physical construction, managing the complex realities of raising and securing the structure on the steep valley site.

Instead of standard stud-work or plasterboard, Norsk Carpentry wrapped the massive oak frame in dense 200mm solid timber panelling (LVL). This entirely timber-walled construction was highly unique, requiring Norsk's specialised skills in sustainable, traditional, and modern wood techniques.

Norsk Carpentry oversaw the detailed structural woodwork required to blend the raw framing with the high-tech intelligent lighting system and the minimalist glass lines of the building.

“We can confirm that Dan Pye and the Norsk team were the principal contractors with our new gallery at Tremenheere. This is a substantial two storey purpose built building which has attracted glowing praise from our visitors. It is now five years old and we have had no follow on building problems.

During the planning and construction the team were always professional, highly competent, thoughtful and responsive to suggestions and requests. All members of the team were a delight to work with. The project was delivered on time and on budget and we could not praise the construction team highly enough. We would thoroughly recommend Norsk to any other potential clients, and we would consider Norsk first for any further building projects.” Jane and Neil, Client
